ADOS Assessment for Autism Evaluation

What is ADOS and How it Works

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is a gold-standard, evidence-based assessment used to evaluate behaviors related to autism spectrum disorder across communication, social interaction, play, and restricted or repetitive behaviors. During the evaluation, a trained clinician engages the child or individual in structured and semi-structured activities designed to naturally bring out social and communication responses. These observations are carefully scored and combined with developmental history and caregiver input. To ensure accuracy and medical validity, the final diagnostic determination is reviewed and signed off by a licensed pediatrician or qualified medical provider.

Our Process

  • Referral

Families begin with an intake process that includes developmental history, concerns, and any prior evaluations. A referral or collaboration with your pediatrician helps ensure a well-rounded understanding of the child’s needs.

  • Assessment

A trained clinician conducts the ADOS using structured activities such as play, conversation, and problem-solving tasks. These activities are designed to observe natural behaviors in a comfortable, supportive environment.

  • Results

The clinician scores the assessment using standardized criteria. Results are analyzed alongside caregiver input and background information to form a comprehensive clinical picture.

  • Pediatrician Sign Off

A licensed pediatrician reviews the findings and provides official diagnostic confirmation if appropriate. Families receive a detailed report along with personalized recommendations and next steps.

What does the Assessment Look Like?

The assessment typically feels like guided play or conversation rather than a formal test. Younger children may engage with toys, pretend play, or interactive games, while older individuals may participate in discussions, storytelling, or problem-solving activities. The setting is calm, structured, and designed to help individuals feel at ease so authentic behaviors can be observed.
